How Do I Choose a Colour?

Colours can appear different due to lighting, technique, and surrounding colors. We recommend: Viewing hand-painted samples or visiting showrooms. Searching Instagram for photos of the shade using hashtags. Consulting our team for personalized advice.

Do I Require Sealant Before Limewash Application?
A sealant may be necessary on surfaces painted with oil-based paint, lacquer, or patched with plaster to ensure proper adhesion and to prevent discoloration.
We recommend scheduling a complimentary site visit with our project manager to assess your walls before advising on whether a sealant is required.
What Is Limewash?
Limewash is a natural, eco-friendly paint made from slaked lime and mineral pigments. It penetrates surfaces to create a breathable finish, helping regulate moisture and prevent mold. Renowned for its soft, matte texture and natural patina, limewash offers a timeless aesthetic and is available in a variety of earthy tones.

What Is Textured Paint?
Textured paint is a versatile decorative finish that adds depth and dimension to walls. It can mimic natural materials like stone or plaster, making it ideal for both modern and rustic designs.

How Do I Choose a Colour?

Choosing the perfect colour for your walls can be challenging, but here’s how we can help: View Samples: We provide hand-painted samples for a more accurate representation of how the colour will look in your space.

Showroom Visits: We can accompany you to our partners’ showrooms to explore options in person. Online Inspiration: Search Instagram hashtags of specific colors to see how they look in real spaces. Keep in mind lighting and surroundings can affect the appearance. Expert Guidance: Our team is here to help you select a color that aligns with your design vision and space requirements.

Can I Customise Limewash or Textured Paint Colours?

Yes, limewash and textured paint colors can often be customized to suit your preferences. We work with our brand partners to help achieve the closest match to your desired colour. Keep in mind that due to natural pigmentation in limewash, slight variations may occur, adding to its unique charm.

Will the Colour Look the Same as on a Computer or Phone Screen?

Not necessarily. Colours viewed on screens may differ from the actual paint due to:

Lighting: Natural and artificial lighting in your space. Surface Texture: Limewash and textured paints interact uniquely with surfaces.

Surrounding Colours: Nearby wall and furniture colors can influence perception.

For accuracy, we recommend using physical samples and viewing them in your space under various lighting conditions.

How Does Limewash Age Over Time?
Limewash develops a natural patina as it ages, creating soft variations in tone that enhance its character. This timeless quality makes it a popular choice for creating a lived-in, organic aesthetic.

Will Lime Paint Cover Uneven Surfaces?
Lime paint enhances natural textures and variations but does not fill cracks or holes. Its matte finish beautifully highlights uneven surfaces for a unique look.

Can Lime Paint Be Used in Storerooms or Bomb Shelters?
Yes, lime paint can be applied in these spaces if the surfaces are clean and stable. Its breathable properties regulate moisture, but proper ventilation is recommended.

Can Lime Paint Be Used on Floors?
No, lime paint is not suitable for floors as it lacks the hardness to withstand wear or moisture.

Can Lime Paint Be Used in Bathrooms or Kitchens?
Lime paint is unsuitable for permanently damp areas like showers but can be used around sinks or cooking areas with a protective topcoat.

Can Lime Paint Be Used on Furniture?
Yes, lime paint can be applied to porous furniture surfaces like wood for a soft, textured finish. Proper preparation and sealing are recommended for durability.

How Long Does Limewash, Textured Paint, or Venetian Plaster Take to Apply and Dry?

Limewash: Dries in 2–4 hours, fully cures in 7–10 days.
Venetian Plaster: May require 1–2 days per layer for drying and polishing.
Textured Paint/Plaster: Typically dries within 2–6 hours

Product and Application

The appearance of our limewash paint may vary depending on the surface, lighting, and primer used. Subtle differences in colour or a slightly powdery texture are a natural characteristic of limewash. We recommend ordering a tester packet if you would like to see how our colours appear in your space.

Dalray Limewash comes in a powdered form. This means it weighs a quarter of the weight of regular paint, saving you money on shipping. All you have to do is add hot water and mix once it arrives!

We have detailed instructions on our website! To see how to use and apply our paint, please visit our instructions page.

Dalray limewash paint can be used on a wide range of surfaces, however different surfaces may require different application processes. See a summary chart of suitable surfaces and recommended preparation on our instructions page.

Dalray limewash paint is compatible with a wide range of mineral or water-based primers.

For best results, we recommend using Dalray Limewash Primer, which is specifically designed to create a breathable, mineral-compatible base that supports even absorption and reduces rub-off during curing.

If using an alternative primer, choose a water-based undercoat with good adhesion and a low-sheen or matte finish. Widely available options that have proven compatible include Dulux One Step Prep, Taubmans 3 in 1 Prep, or Taubmans Professional Undercoat.

We do not recommend primers with strong sealing properties or glossier finishes, as these can reduce adhesion and alter the final appearance of the limewash. If a high-seal or glossy primer has already been used, lightly sanding the surface prior to application will improve adhesion. Oil-based primers are not recommended.

For more detailed guidance on when a primer is recommended, surface-specific advice, and application instructions, please refer to our Primer product page and Instructions page.

No - unpainted brick and render do not need to be primed regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor surfaces. They are porous enough that the paint adheres extremely well to their surfaces, so a primer is not required.

If the brick or render has been previously painted, a primer will be required.

Typical coverage of Dalray paint is 7.5㎡ per litre, based on 2 coats of paint.

When our full sized product is mixed with 3L of water, it forms approximately 4 litres of limewash paint which is enough to cover about 30㎡ of primed wall with two coats. In other words, our 1.6kg product should be enough paint to cover an average sized bedroom (approximately).

Coverage for brick and render will be lower due to the porosity and absorbancy of those surfaces.

Unlike the uniform tone of regular paint, limewash is known for its organic variations in tone, which look like subtle clouds from afar. The tone of Dalray Limewash is affected by the type of limestone, pigments and natural agents we add. We aim to produce limewash with subtle tone variations that tastefully bring rooms to life, however if you are looking for more variation in tone we'd recommend one of our darker colours. The darker the colour of the paint, the more variation.

It is an organic, natural product, so for this reason the texture of limewash is chalky, or slightly powdery and soft to the touch. Limewash paint is most chalky during the week after application while it sets and cures.

By nature of the organic elements in limewash paint, it is slightly less hardy than modern paints which have chemical additives to improve their hardiness. For most regular applications, such as painting the walls of lounge rooms, bedrooms and hallways, we find this isn't a concern.

For applications where there is expected to be additional wear and tear, customers could apply a clear, matte spray-on paint sealer once our limewash has dried to preserve the surface. However, the benefit of limewash without a sealer is that it's very easy to do touch-ups and it retains the breathability of the paint.

Not always. Use one when you want extra durability or easier cleaning - think hallways, kids’ rooms, gyms, or light-humidity bathrooms. A sealer “locks in” the surface and reduces the light powder transfer typical of matte limewash.

We don’t currently sell a sealer. We recommend you choose one based on your priority:

If you want to keep breathability and a matte, mineral look, go with a mineral silicate sealer. It stays vapour-open, reduces powder transfer, and only slightly deepens the colour.

If you need maximum wipeability and scuff resistance, choose a water-based acrylic sealer. It forms a thin film, is easiest to clean, deepens colour more, and may add a soft sheen.

Sealers improve cleanability but do not waterproof walls (not for constantly wet zones like inside showers). Always check the product’s TDS and test a small area over your exact primer/surface.
